I also don’t understand how people can be so cruel. Just last night John was reading me an article
about how there are many payday loan offices preying on elderly and disabled
people. (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120277630957260703.html?mod=todays_us_page_one)
Now if you don't really feel like reading the article I'll gve you a hypothetical example of what's going on. An disabled lady falls on some hard times, and it's going to be a few weeks until she receives her disability check. She needs to feed her family, so she goes to a payday loan center and takes out $200. Not being fully literate, she signs up for a loan with exorbant interest rates. The loan center is then entitled to say $300 of her $600 monthly check. Soon, the woman and her family are evicted because they can't keep up with their living expenses, and the woman is jailed for defaulting on her loan. Seriously, it's that bad. Read the article if you don't believe me :)
Now first of all, I really can’t fathom how this can
possibly be legal, and secondly I don’t understand how people are so horrible.
Now perhaps it’s because I’ve been very privileged, and I’ve never known want
of anything, but I do not comprehend how so many people, individuals to entire
governments are ruled by greed. How is
it that so many people are corrupted by the pursuit of money that they can degrade
the lives of others?
Why do people struggle and compete to live in a bigger
house, have a bigger flat-screen tv and a bigger car? Why are we, especially we
as americans, never satisfied until we’ve not only kept up with the Jones’, but
kicked sand in their face and left the Jones’ in the dust?
Now I’m not trying to say that I’ve got everything figured
out, or even sound like I do. But I really feel that we have reached a new all
time low, when stealing from the poor has become status quo, especially when
the poor are disabled and elderly. It’s disgusting.

Ultimate in Keeping up with the Jones'
This in from IC Press Citizen:
Iowa City Police are investigating the death of an Iowa City mother and her four children in their east Iowa City home.
According to Iowa City Police Sgt. Troy Kelsay:
Iowa City Police received a 911 call about 6:31 a.m. directing them to 629 Barrington Road in the Windsor Ridge subdivision in east Iowa City. The call came from a cell phone and the caller immediately disconnected.
Police arrived at the scene and found the house unlocked. They entered the home, fearing for the family's safety, and found the bodies of Sheryl Sueppel and her four children. Sueppel's husband, Steven Sueppel, wasn't there and the family's tan Toyota Sienna minivan was missing. Police haven't confirmed the cause of death, but did say that the incident was not a shooting.
Police launched a search for Steven Sueppel, a former vice president at Hills Bank, who was recently indicted for embezzling more than half a million dollars from the bank.
Sad... so sad.
Sorry Panda
In my struggle to do 100 and 10 things at once, I did not get the full jest of this rant....
You are right. It is a crying shame that "we" allow these places. It a crying shame that "we" do not reach out our hands and to help. Its a crying shame that "we" take advantage of the old, lame, week, poor. Heck its awful that "we" take advantage of even the strong.
What are "our" motives? Stuff. Stuff and more stuff. and then when we have lots of stuff, we have to live in a bigger house to keep our stuff. And we have to have a bigger car to carry our stuff. And we have to work longer and harder to manage our stuff. And pretty soon our stuff is ruling us....
I just want to say, though, not everybody is working in these dead end jobs to maintain their stuff. Some are working in these jobs so that they can keep their heads above the water. And provide homes for their kids. And they are happy.
Found your passion?
Maybe you've found it! Maybe being an advocate for the weak, poor and elderly is what you should do! There is nothing more noble than speaking for someone who has no voice!
I guess what Jaci and I are trying to say is you can't judge other people's motives and / or choices.
Life isn't fair or easy and then you die! And maybe the flat screen tv is the only comfort some people have. Who knows?
It would be nice if we could all do what we wanted to do but for the vast majority, we can't. But maybe we are! Maybe having a decent job that pays the bills, being able to put braces on Suzy, having fun with friends and family on the weekends is exactly what we want. Maybe being a soccer mom and volunteering at your kid's school, helping with homework and producing decent members of society is enough.
Public Apology
I would like to apologize to Joni for my recent comments. They have been directed at her personally rather than the things she said in her rants.
We each have to live our own life. I wouldn't want to live her life and I am quite certain that she wouldn't want to live mine.
I wish them only the best with their bus and their life on the road. I truly hope that they are happy and safe.
I hope in time that she will be able to forgive me!
Judging Motives...
Jodi is right. You really can't judge other's motives. Everyone has a story that you just don't know about. What about the woman (Sally) who is dieing of breast cancer with 2 kids and was a victim of spousal abuse. Is she living an unlived life by just sitting at home and playing with her kids. What if she wants to give them a swingset but can't afford it? Are her motives to "keep up with the Jones'".
Now that I've got a high end salary and a child, I've really had to reevaluate my motives in life. Is the money worth it? No, it isn't. But what is worth it is knowing that here at a job that I enjoy. And I know that I am effecting people. Hopefully I am making the world just a little bit better for my child.
Being in this position also allows my husband to be with Hannah. A more noble job with less money may not allow this and we'd both have to work just to make the monthly bills.
It's a shame
What you have described is truly a shame. The poor and the elderly are easy victims for greedy, unscrupulus people. I guess these businesses fill a need in the community otherwise they would not be springing up all over the place.
How did Grandma get to the place where she needed a loan shark? Did her grandchildren sell her down the river for a flat-screen? It's a sad, hard life out there!
Not everyone wants to live in a bus.
The "check into cash" places are a travesty. Yes, you are right. Its unfortunate that our government has legalized this type of business that used to only known to the Frankie the loan shark that'd take your knee caps if you didn't pay him. Last I'd heard the gov was doing something about. I'd be writing to your senators and reps and tell them that this needs to be put back in the queue.
Keeping up with the Jones' is a problem with some people in the US. But there are many others that are just trying to keep their heads above water. These places prey on the unfortunate. Jon- you have to remember that YOU are very fortunate. Not everyone has the opportunities that life has given you. Yes, you and John can work part time and make ends meet. But tell me... What are you paying for rent or mortgage? How about food costs? heating, electricity? Are you paying water, sewer, garbage bills? Do you have to travel/commute for work? How much do you have to spend on gas? What about kids? Do you have them? And if you do, do you have braces to pay for? What about the band trip to New York City? Does little Suzy have to stay at home with crocked teeth because you've decided that you want to play instead of having a full time job?
I live in a very modest home in an area with a low cost of living. I do have 2 car loans on used cars that are modest to most on the road these days. When you look at our "necessities" our budget is over $1850 a month. Included health and car insurance and you are looking at 2500/month. Now put $100 a week for groceries which is not that unreasonable. And you are close to $3000/month. Thats a $36k job needed just to keep a roof over your head. You need to make $18/hour at 40 hours for 50 weeks a year to make that kind of change.
Think about it a little longer before you get back on your soap box.
Retooling of my own
When I read your rant, I got the impression that you felt that people used these "Check Into Cash" places so that they could "keep up with Mr. Jones."
It is my impression that these so called services are for those who can not get credit. Those who live pay check to pay check. Those that when their beat up car goes out and they have no other means to get it fixed. Those who need money to get food on the tables. Those who do not make $18/hour so that ends meet. What I was trying to say is that it is very easy to get into the situation where you'd have to go to this place without "keeping up."
Was I saying that you're spoiled? Nope. Was I trying to say to you that you're living an unlived life? Nope. I was trying to redirect you to the real travesty of the problem... the legislation that allows such things to those who are not as fortunate as you are.
Keep asking the questions, Joni.
